WHO MADE MY CLOTHES?

This is Heidy Pelechu, a weaver from Salcajá, Guatemala.

The question "Who Made My Clothes?" arises from a campaign that seeks to highlight the people behind the production of clothing around the world and promote knowledge transfer in the fashion industry. It is also the central slogan of the "Fashion Revolution" campaign, which emerged in response to the Rana Plaza building tragedy in Bangladesh, where hundreds of textile workers died due to an accumulation of bad practices by industry leaders.

This campaign seeks to raise awareness worldwide about the supply chain, transparency in the textile industry, changes in production methods, consumer empowerment, among other topics.

It is important not to forget that behind every garment, there is a person, or several, bearers of knowledge of artisanal processes, but above all, of humanity, identity, and individual and collective learning.

Heidy is part of our team and leads a group of foot loom weavers in Salcajá, Quetzaltenango, in the Guatemalan highlands. She, along with her team, weave textiles using the Jasé technique we use to make our ART PLIQUÉ®. Her team members include knotters, textile dyers, foot loom assemblers, and Weavers. Her hands master the foot loom with precision, with a skill that is only passed down from generation to generation, like many of the artisanal techniques and processes of a country as rich in craftsmanship as Guatemala.

The work of Heidy and her team is fundamental to her family, both economically and culturally. It is a work of community social sustainability. She, like many women in Guatemala and around the world, wants a sustainable life. Who doesn't?

When our customers purchase a JASPE by Vitto garment, they take with them a part of Heidy, her family, her team, and her community.
